Navami: The first scene that strikes u as u venture out of ur house is the extraordinary long queues in front of meat (mutton) shops. After a long abstinence from meat (Ashtami is a vegetarian day for believers – one day without non-vegetarian food for a Bengali appears to be as long as a year:-)). Though most households have refrigerators these days, the long wait seems to be due to the penchant for freshly cut mutton!!!!
The first pandal that we went to was Chakraberia (referred to as tablefan). The theme was lotus buds & 'shiuli flowers'. The visual was stunning & only on getting much closer cud we figure out that the 'flowers' were actually table fans!!!! The idol of Durga was very different & play of light inside the pandal was outstanding. Bravo.
